Mesan Che Richardson

Mesan Che Richardson is founder, executive director and a board member of HUMANDREAM Foundation, a Los Angeles nonprofit that describes itself as a collective impact organization building the systems, partnerships and programs to end poverty and advance peace, freedom and equality. His work starts from a conviction he formed early: the people who need systems the most are almost never the people those systems were built to serve.

Richardson grew up food insecure in South Central Los Angeles. Before he was old enough to hold a job, he pumped gas at a neighborhood station for drivers’ spare change. He later worked part-time jobs through high school and college, alongside financial aid and student loans, to put himself through school. He was a first-generation student in an Educational Opportunity Program, and he went on to spend 20 years inside Educational Opportunity Programs, designing the systems that helped other first-generation students from the same communities enter institutions and belong there.

Over those two decades he came to see the same pattern well beyond South Central. The people closest to a problem usually hold the knowledge to solve it. What they lack is the architecture that connects that knowledge to resources, visibility and institutional capacity. Richardson worked through that thesis in writing for years before HUMANDREAM formally existed, and the foundation was built from it.

In California, that architecture takes the form of CHW Corps. HUMANDREAM Workforce Alliance serves as the program operations and backbone organization of a multi-institutional community health work force initiative with Peer Voices United across Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties. The program recruits from underserved communities, trains workers through credentialed pathways aligned with Medi-Cal requirements and places them with enrolled provider organizations. Abroad, HUMANDREAM supports locally led work through its Africa Fund in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a circular food system governance effort in Nairobi, Kenya. Ruby Guillen, co-chair of the UNA-USA Human Rights Affinity Group, serves on HUMANDREAM’s board.

HUMANDREAM Foundation, Inc. is a minority- and woman-founded, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) based in Los Angeles. Richardson’s career has turned on one question — who public systems are built for — and it is the same question public AI infrastructure has to answer.
